The Crest Symbol’s Meaning
In the Mar crest, the Chapeau or “cap of maintenance” means that the Chief of the Tribe is a peer, in this case an Earl. The wings symbolize swiftness & protection. The blue color (azure tincture) of the wings stands for truth & loyalty. The diagonal stripe (a bend) stands for a willingness to defend or protect. The gold color of the “bend” & the crosses signifies generosity, wisdom & godliness. The crosses are “cross crosslets fitchee”, meaning that each arm of the main cross is itself crossed (forming 4 crosses all together) & that the bottom cross arm is pointed. This device symbolizes the four-fold mystery of the gospels, the penetrating nature of the Christian beliefs, & the unshakeability of the faith that comes from the acceptance of Christ. The “four-fold mystery” symbolized by the cross crosslets has been described as the four Gospels themselves or as the four mysterious & miraculous acts of Christ; the Transfiguration, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection, & the Ascension.
